Here’s what it does when done right. Counseling allows you help in learning how to change your perception of pain. It also helps in determining, perhaps, why you choose to experience pain the way you do. Who in your life has modeled pain for you?
What did they model? Misery? Moaning, groaning, complaining? Or, did your model stay stoic and never say or word or complain? Then perhaps after they had stayed silent for a while, they blamed everyone around them for not allowing them to express themselves.
It could be all of the above or none of the above. Everyone’s experiences are different. This emphasizes why counseling for chronic pain is one of the most important choices you can make for yourself as you come to terms with your back and joint pain wherever it exists in your body.
It’s time for you to make wise and informed choices for yourself. You are allowed to put yourself first, no matter what anyone around you may believe. You run out of fuel if you try to take care of everyone around you and consequently fall apart. It does you, your family and your friends a disservice.
